How is Triethanolamine (TEA) Produced?
Triethanolamine (TEA) is produced by the reaction of ethylene oxide and ammonia. This reaction is carried out by first reacting ethylene oxide with hydroxyethylamine, and then reacting the resulting product once more with ethylene oxide hydroxyethylamine.
TEA production is carried out in a series of reactors. The first step is to obtain ammonia in the liquid phase and then add ethylene oxide. Since this reaction is exothermic, a cooler may be required.
As a result of the reaction, primary hydroxyethylamine (monoethanolamine or MEA) is obtained. This product is then used once more to react with hydroxyethylamine of ethylene oxide until TEA is obtained. The product obtained at the end of the reaction is purified using solvents and a filtration process.
TEA production may also involve the use of catalysts. For example, a potassium hydroxide catalyst can increase the reaction rate and improve TEA yield.
